I don’t believe what I just saw!

On October 15, 1988, the great Jack Buck uttered one of the most famous calls in sports history, after he witnessed Los Angles Dodger Kirk Gibson’s monster home run to win Game 1 of the World Series against the Oakland Athletics.

"I don't believe what I just saw!!!," Buck proclaimed as Gibson rounded the bases exuberantly pumping his fists.

In what was arguably, one of the greatest moments in baseball history, the Dodgers had their backs against the wall and overcame to win in dramatic fashion.

It was the bottom of the 9th, the Dodgers were down by a run, with two outs, when the physically hampered Gibson stepped to the plate as a designated hitter. Gibson, who was wincing in pain as he prepared to bat, had told Dodgers Manager Tommy Lasorda that he had maybe one good swing in him. In that one moment in time, Gibson summoned all the strength he had and with that one swing, smashed the game-winning, walk-off home-run.

The lesson from that game that we can all learn, is that no matter what, no matter how down we are...inside of all of us, is the ability to reach down deep and overcome. As I write this, March 14th of 2020, we are in the middle of the Coronavirus pandemic here in the United States. I suffer from anxiety and I will readily admit that this has been a bit overwhelming. But, even though to some of us, things might seem insurmountable...two outs in the bottom of the 9th...like Kirk Gibson, we all will reach down and summon that inner strength to overcome this.

If there is one thing we all do well as Americans, we rally. And, if we remember Kirk Gibson's heroic moment in 1988, we are reminded that anything is possible.
