58th Knoxville Nationals

On Friday, August 10th, my wife and I drove 9 hours from our home in Benton, Arkansas to Knoxville, Iowa to cover the final two days of the 58th Knoxville Nationals. Our reason for the trip was to interview several people for an article that I am writing for FLAT OUT Magazine and to take photos. The trip was great. My wife and I had a great time. We didn't get a lot of sleep, but we had a lot of fun over the two days we spent talking to people and shooting the races. I did some uncharacteristic things, like not shooting with my Nikkor 300 2.8, which was a mistake. I missed on many images that would have been great. I also messed around with some slow shutter panning and wasted a lot of time doing so. Lesson learned. Stick to what I do best and make better decisions next time!

Here are some of the images I captured. I will also include some that my wife shot as well. Enjoy!

NIKON D4, F2.8, 1/1250, ISO 640, MANUAL

Turn 2 at Knoxville Raceway. The evening light was pretty nice at the time this image was captured. He jumped over the cushion and I was able to capture a nice rooster spray off the right rear tire.

Like the Kentucky Derby, you see some interesting hats at the Nationals.

Catching some back light out of turn 2. I love different shots. So many people take the same boring left side images and miss on images like this one above. I try really hard to capture something different.

A really nice, clean, right side shot coming out of turn 2 at Knoxville Raceway.

I shot this image from the top of the Clauson tower on the back stretch. It's a nice wide shot and I didn't want the car to be the entire focus of the image. You see the groves of the racing surface through the corner as well.

NIKON D710, F2.8, 1/3200, ISO 1100, SHUTTER PRIORITY

My wife Robin shot this beautiful image from the pit gate on the back stretch. I really like the color and warm evening light. I am teaching Robin to shoot and she did a really great job this weekend.
